GILL SPORTON
It is with great sadness that we report the loss of Gill Sporton on Saturday 23 January.

NIMAN ISRAEL
What a super event this is! The Niman Israel mixed teams event requires you to play 12 boards with EACH of your three team mates. A chance to hone your system (or a built in excuse when the wheels drop off). The event was played in excellent spirit and it was good to see some of our 'top' players AND some 'new' faces from the north and south of our area.. Despite the very enjoyable bridge, the highlight of the competition was an unbelievable meal provided by Anne Bell. How she achieved this for a fiver is seriously beyond belief. - Brilliant Anne and thank you!!!
Her team were leading at half time, and after the meal, players were obviously SO appreciative that they decided to give Anne's team top after top.
Consequently, I am delighted to report that the winners of the 2016 Niman Israel were Anne & Eric Bell, Chris Stenning and Jim Hodgson. Well done! .

Do not miss this event in 2017!!!

CONGRATULATIONS
Also to Margaret McCabe from the Durham Bridge Club who also achieved GRAND MASTER ranking last year.

CORRECTION
The date for the NEBA Congress 2016 has been wrongly quoted in the December edition of the English Bridge magazine.  As there is a two month  lead in period for editorial copy this error may be repeated in the February edition.
The situation will be fully rectified from April 2016 onwards.  Members are advised that the correct dates for the 2016 Congress are 11th-13th November 2016.

2016 ARNOLD DEANE MIXED PAIRS
28 pairs competed for the 2016 Arnold Deane Salver and the competition, hosted by Brunton Bridge Club attracted a quality field from across our region. The event was very well directed by Ann Caygill and the afternoon tea was a triumph for the Brunton B.C. secretary Eunice Ferguson.

After a number of years when this competition had to be cancelled through lack of support, NEBA are to be complimented on re-inventing their direct entry events which have all become really enjoyable and, dare I say it, friendly competitions for all abilities.

The winners were Georgia & Steve Ray from the Brunton Bridge Club. Their winning score, a huge 69%, was almost 10% ahead of the runners up from the Whitley Bay Bridge Club Patricia Tuff & David Morrison.

Winners of the NGS prize - Peter Marshall and Jo Lormor

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT!
A dozen elderly British nationals - including a former Honorary Consul - have been arrested in Thailand after local police raided a bridge club in the popular beach resort of Pattaya.

Over 50 police officers & military volunteers raided the ex-pat bridge club on Wednesday night, arresting 32 foreigners, & holding them until 3am.

Despite not playing for money, Thai police say the bridge club broke the law by 'possessing more than 120 playing cards at one time'.

They were held in custody for 12 hrs before being released on a £100 bail.
