NEICKO
The Kempson Cup is the NEBA's premier event for teams, the purest form of bridge contest.  In recent years this event has been a seeded knock-out competition with green points available throughout. The winning team is presented with the majestic trophy which was given in 1935 by the top player Ewart Kempson.

Despite these attractions the number of entries have been falling with only 5 teams in 2016/17 season. In addition entries to the North East League the NEBA qualifier for the Pachabo Cup have fallen even further causing it to be scrapped for next year. The lack of popularity for teams of 4 matches seems to be a shame when compared to the success of the inter-club leagues for teams of 8 where most clubs take part.

The NEBA executive has decided to completely change the format of the competition to try to encourage many more teams to enter and experience the joy of teams play. The idea is that entries be made via clubs rather like the Nicko run by the EBU. All rounds up to the final stage will be regionalised into North and South of our area to minimise travelling. All matches to be of 24 boards with compulsory change of opponents at halftime and played at home on a date convenient to both teams. Every team will be drawn in a group of 2 or 3 teams and will be guaranteed at least 2 matches.

The exact format will depend on the numbers of entries. The event will be green pointed throughout with the winning team being eligible to compete in the Pachabo Cup. Pairs who reach the regional final will be selected to represent the NEBA in the annual match against the East of a Scotland at Berwick in early July.

The entry fee to the clubs will be 5 pounds for 1 team and 10 pounds for 2 or more teams hopefully encouraging clubs to enter as many teams as possible.

I have attached a note covering above points to go on club notice boards and I would appreciate if you could promote this new competition to your members.

I will follow up in July with regard to taking entries.

Any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards - Mary Page NEBA Secretary
