Apologies for Absence
Apologies for absence had been received from John McCourt, Gill Gold, Gordon Cockburn, Brian Hooper and Jocelyn Gordon.
The Chairman welcomed members to the AGM and thanked Cramlington for hosting the event and waiving their visitor fee for bridge afterwards. The Chairman thanked the Executive, the Tournament Secretaries, the selectors, the webmaster, the County Youth Officer and the Regional Club Committee representative for their work over the last 12 months. She extended special thanks to Bev Godfrey who had retired from her post as Congress Secretary after 7 successful years and Chris Benneworth who had announced his intention to stand down as Chief Tournament Director. Gill Gold is the new Congress Secretary and Norman Gray would take over as Chief Tournament Director later in the summer. The Chairman reported that the Executive have decided to produce an annual report. It is factual and has a focus on trends and longer term direction for NEBA. It will be circulated to clubs and put on to the website. On a personal note the Chairman has enjoyed her visits to clubs, meeting new members and catching up with old friends.
Minutes of the last meeting
The minutes of the 2012 AGM held on 24 May 2012 were circulated. Julian Gibson proposed that the minutes be accepted, Elaine Purvis seconded the motion and the minutes were agreed.
The accounts for the year ended 31 March 2012 were circulated. The Treasurer reported that there had been a small loss for the year. NEBA had purchased a new Duplimate machine at a cost of £3k. P2P subscriptions were holding up so NEBA fees would remain the same for the forthcoming year. She thanked the auditor, Chris Hope, for auditing the accounts. Acceptance of the accounts was proposed by Norman Gray and seconded by Brian Pacey and carried unanimously.
Election of officers
Only one nomination had been received for each post. Mike Stanbury proposed that all the people nominated should be elected and Ann Hawkswell seconded that. It was carried unanimously. Those elected were;
Chairman Ann Caygill
Vice Chairman Val Gibson
Treasurer Sue Caygill
Secretary John McCourt
Chief Tournament Secretary Ian Rankin
Election of Auditor
Chris Hope was proposed by Bev Godfrey, seconded by Frieda Simpkin and re-elected unanimously.
Any other Business
Anne Bell asked whether the 1.00 start for NEBA events, other than the inter club, was deterring entries to events. The Chairman explained that NEBA had conducted market research before making the change and that the majority of people preferred a 1.00 start and the earlier finish that enabled. There was a brief discussion about whether 11.00 am would be better still but it was quickly discounted. Brian Pacey reported that the inter-club closing date was likely to be mid August. He was asked whether it would be possible to arrange the draw in order to minimise travel when the weather was likely to be at its worst. He undertook to try to implement this if possible though he thought the logistics would be challenging.
