BISHOP BELLES ARE TOPS
A fabulous quartet of Bishop belles scored a tremendous hit with their swinging cabaret act at the 'Bridge Club Live Re-union' held at Leamington Spa 11th-13th April 2014. Providing entertainment for assembled bridge players from across England, the group under the stage name of 'The FourTops' (we've seen that name before but it wasn't quite like this) earned rapturous applause for their act entitled 'Bridge's Got Talent' (sadly Simon Cowell missed it). Pictured below are left to right - Alison Young, Marilyn Dexter, Audrey Bainbridge and Louise Badcock (picture courtesy of Audrey Bainbridge).
In the serious bit, the girls came third in the Bridge Teams competition.
Well done all. - John Dobson, Bishop Auckland B.C.
FROM THE INDEPENDENT
By dint of carefully timed coughs, two German doctors cheated their way to the pinnacle of this most genteel of card games. READ THE ITEM
This event coincided with todays (April 2nd) afternoon radio 4 play on the Shapiro/Reese scandal of 1965.
A hand from Buenos Aires. Here Reese shows 3 fingers on the backs of the cards and has three hearts.
A sad end to the month's news is that Morrie Rowlands, a Brunton Bridge Club regular, died last Friday.
KEMPSON CUP 2014
The Kempson Cup Final, between Graham Cox and Martin Kane, will be held on Sunday 27th April at Wearside Bridge Club, starting at 1pm.
Spectators are welcome (free), although we can only probably accommodate a maximum of 40! Watch and learn from how the experts play.
The Club Chairs Meeting which is in the NEBA calendar on the 2nd April has been postponed until sometime after the AGM.
TD TRAINING COURSES
Arrangements have been made to run TD Training sessions in the North East at Durham Bridge Club in 2014 on the following dates:-
26 April, 2014 Essentials
7 June, 2014 Book Rulings
17 July, 2014 Judgement Rulings
20 Sept, 2014 Assessment
Booking should be made via the EBU. There are 16 places per session and each session needs about 10 members to run on a viable basis.
There will be a memorial service for Stella at the United Reform Church in Northgate Darlington at 11.00 on 23rd April followed by a reception at the St. Georges Bridge Club.
It is with great sadness I inform you of the death of Stella Bateman. For many many years together with her husband Joe she was an ever present at NEBA events. I stand to be corrected but I doubt if any other pair has played in as many NEBA competitions over the last 25 years.
The same probably applies to the Hurworth and Darlington clubs. They had a unique bidding system which ensured they missed few games or slams. However it was not without success and their names adorn a number of trophies.
Enough on the playing side. What is far more important is the person herself. A joy to play against. Exemplary table manners. Because she was such a quick player one usually had the bonus of a pleasant conversation as well. If someone needed a lift Stella was first in the queue to offer assistance.
Over many years she was a stalwart helper at Hurworth events and club nights. Cooking meals, arranging partners and the all so necessary menial tasks such as clearing tables.
Always welcoming new members she was particularly kind and encouraging to younger players.
She will be sorely missed and I am sure we all offer our sincere condolences to Joe and their sons.

NEBA SUB COMMITTEE
A sub committee has been formed to look at ways of increasing participation in NEBA competitions. If you have any suggestions I would happily forward them to this committee for consideration. I have made two small modifications to the NEBA 'Home Page'. On the menu bar, I have replaced the Ecats link with a link to the EBU Grading Scheme and I have moved the 'Next Local Events' to the top of the page. Again, if there are things that you would like including on your website let me know.

BRIDGE IN NEW ZEALAND
Here are a couple of photos of us at our Auckland bridge group. Angela Royle's club is a private concern which is very friendly and welcoming. We looked at the Auckland Bridge Club site and it had so many rules and regulations (far more don'ts than dos) that we decided they didn't sound at all hospitable. We've been attending one night a week, a smallish group with no more than ten tables, feeling we didn't want to get involved with the more serious players until we had a feel for the way they play. We came fourth on the leader board one week and then first the following week. We've been travelling for the last couple of weeks and won't get back to the club until just before we return, but it's been good to keep our hand in and we've learnt that bridge is a really good way to meet folk in foreign parts. We were made very welcome by all the couples we played against. This club operates on the same principles as yours! We get fairly regular updates from friends at home and keep an eye on the NEBA website to see how folk are doing. - Trevor & Diane
Trevor and Diane Darwin are keen bridge students who have tried playing in a couple of NEBA clubs.
Instead of bidding boxes the club uses bidding pads which are designed for each player to enter their bids in turn. Once play begins the lead is noted on the same sheet for later reference and put to the side. It felt strange at first but we soon adapted. - Trevor
The Kempson Cup final 2014 will be held between the Teams captained by Graham Cox & Martin Kane.
The annual NEBA AGM will be on Wed. 21st May at Darlington Bridge Club starting at 6.30 pm
REGIONAL CLUB COMMITTEE
The EBU disbanded the regional club committees and has replaced them with Regional Committees for County Chairs. Val Gibson and Ann Caygill atteneted the first Northern Regional Committee meeting. The minutes are available on the EBU Website.
Just found this good picture of Steve & Georgia on the SBU website - From the Peebles Congress 2013. They had won the Clive Owen Trophy for Mixed Pairs
