NORTHERN BRIDGE LEAGUE

Several people have expressed an interest in representing the North East in this inter-county teams of 8 competition. There are 4 matches in the season played at various venues – Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, Blackburn and Keighley. The format is usually 7 X 7 board matches but depends on the number of teams playing on the day. A good buffet tea is included in the cost of £10.00 per person and we try to cut down travel expenses by arranging for car shares. The dates for this year’s matches are:

Saturday 2nd August

Saturday 30th August

Saturday 13th September

Saturday 11th October

If you are interested in playing please let Pauline Durie know as soon as possible indicating which of the dates you would be available to play. pmdurie2004@yahoo.co.uk

TONY BELL
It is with great sadness that Hexham Bridge Club announce the death of Tony Bell.

A well known figure in bridge circles Tony will be remembered as a true gentleman and his courtesy at the bridge table should be a lesson to us all. In his quiet way he was always encouraging, especially to new players, and very knowledgeable about the game of bridge. He was a member of Hexham Bridge Club for twenty-three years and a past member of Brunton and Newcastle Bridge Clubs. Tony played in many NEBA and other competitions over the years and he was invited to play for the County on a number of occasions. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Tony’s funeral will take place on Tuesday, 12th August at 11.00 a.m. at the West Road Crematorium in Newcastle followed by a reception at The Beaumont Hotel in Hexham at 12.15 p.m.

EBU COUNTY CHAIRMAN'S MEETING
Please find attached the EBU County Chairmen’s notes from the meeting that was held recently on 2nd July.

OPEN

NATIONAL COUNTIES WORKING GROUP DISCUSSION DOC.
The recent National Counties Working Group meeting looked at three discussion documents prepared by members of the Eastern Counties Working Group.  The papers are entitled (with links):

Best Practice for County Associations, prepared by John Williams

Getting More 40 to 60 Year Olds Playing Bridge, prepared by Peter Bushby

Bridge Clubs Premises, prepared by Bernard Eddleston

The above links are to the work in progress documents and, when completed, it is hoped that Counties/Clubs, will make use of them, or not, as they choose.  The aim is to share best practice, and materials, so that we are not continually reinventing the wheel.  Perhaps then we can help each other develop, and feedback on, already produced materials.

NEBA Chair Val Gibson, would like to invite comments on these documents - either to be posted on this website or sent to our secretary at pagemary@hotmail.co.uk

EBU MAGAZINE
Dear All,
You will have seen from the Chairman's August Editorial that English Bridge is changing size and is becoming smaller; not quite an A5, but small enough for Royal Mail to consider it Letter size (as opposed to Large Letter) and so charge a LOT less for mailing it. The saving will go a long way towards preserving the life of the printed version of the magazine (unless Royal Mail changes their price structure yet again, but we will have to worry about that if / when it happens).

To make up for the reduction in size, we're going up to 64 pages, but there is no doubt that it's becoming quite difficult to fit everything in and not disappoint readers. One of the casualties of the change in size, I'm sorry to say, is the County News, which is limited to 8 (smaller) pages and so can contain less news than before.

SCARBOROUGH CONGRESS
Steve & Georgia Ray were 5th in the three session Summer Swiss Pairs event at Scarborough this year. 156 pairs competed over Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July.

Also in the top ten places were the NEBA pair of Liz Reese and Bob Watts who were 7th.
Congratulations to both pairs!

John Atthey's team were 3rd in the 'B' team' final played on Friday 25th.

WINNERS OF THE NEBA 2014 OPEN PAIRS item14
An encouraging turnout of 13.5 tables played in the new NEBA 'Open Pairs' competition open to regulars and non-NEBA members.
The event was won by
Nichola Cockerill-Smith & Beverley Godfrey shown here being presented with the trophy by new NEBA Secretary Mary Page. Nichola & Beverley won with a magnificent 69%.
The runners up were Rosemary Gray & Simon Hedley with 65%.

NEBA v EAST OF SCOTLAND MATCH
item12
It was a great day played in a friendly spirit.
The East of Scotland won the A team match and NEBA won the B team.

The 'A' team of C.F. OWEN, D. HASSAN, B. LUMSDEN, F.R. SRINGETT, J.R.ATTHEY, J.A.GIBSON, M.KANE and V.GIBSON lost by 33 imps.

The 'B' team of N.DURIE, L.MUIR, F.ROBINSON, A.LESTER, D.TURNER M.CROWE, J.SPRINGETT and M.STANBURY won by 112 imps.

One board was particularly costly to the North East as in both matches all the North East pairs bid a slam which failed on a finesse, whilst all the Scottish pairs stayed in game. If the finesse had been successful the North East would have won both matches. C’est la vie.

2014 NEBA SUMMER PAIRS WINNERS
