HUBERT PHILIPS SUCCESS
The Hubert Philips is a national knockout competition with a number of differences.
1. Each team must have at least one woman & one man.
2. Scoring is by aggregate including honours.
3. You have to play an equal number of boards with each member of the team.
The team captained by our NEBA chairman Val Gibson with John Atthey, Bill March and Clive Owen has reached the semi finals having beaten some strong teams on their way there.
One team included Brian and Nevena Senior and Justin Hackett and another Jason Hackett, Alec Hydes and an Austrian lady international.
In the quarter final they beat a midland team captained by David Jones.
YOUTH BRIDGE (From the Council Meeting)
Simon Barb has also asked whether any member would be interested in taking on the position of County Youth officer and would be prepared to investigate bringing bridge into the schools in the North East area. The Chairman will make enquiries.
TEACHING BRIDGE (From the Council Meeting)
Simon Barb, Education and Development Manager, EBED, has contacted our Chairman with a view to running a training course to develop bridge teachers in the North East as part of their Club teacher programme – for which each EBU-affiliated club is able to nominate one person at concessionary rates (currently free.) It was agreed that Clubs would be contacted to see if anyone is interested – the course would need about a dozen delegates to make it viable.
and a Very Happy and Healthy New Year
LAST NIGHT'S TELEVISION Tues. 25th Nov.
Four clues that had to be connected on the wall in last night's posh quiz show 'Only Connect' were - Finesse - Slam -Yarborough - Overtrick.
The winning team, QI Elves, solved the other four word links but had NO idea what linked these four words! They thought that they may be words that "sounded like places". Even when given the answer, there was no hint that they had ever heard of these terms.
Do we do enough to promote bridge as a major pastime or do anything to popularise our game to the outside world? Bridge is a great product, but, we make little attempt to sell the game.

2014 TOLLEMACHE Monday 24th Nov.
In the Tollemache (inter counties championship) qualifier, the NEBA team came a close third behind Avon and London, just failing to qualify despite only losing 1 match (to Avon). The crunch match was the last of the day against Avon, so it felt a long journey back from Birmingham having lost!
The team was Julian Gibson, (capt) John Atthey, Steve & Georgia Ray, Martin Kane & Damian Hassan, Shivam Shah & Basil letts, Val Gibson & Bill March.

Sadly Belle Boast, a long standing member of Brunton, passed away today 28th October, a week before her 100th birthday.
I am sure everyone will remember that Belle and her friend Gwen, hosted some of the best parties at the NEBA Congress both at Otterburn and The Derwent. I can still remember when I was at Peebles and Belle and Gwen were playing against Zia Mahmood and his partner, and Belle doubled him in his final contract, saying "there are too many points in this pack!!!" That evening in his seminar he acknowledged he had been taken to the cleaners by a pair of " little old ladies" - we all had a good laugh about it including Zia. Happy memories!!!!! Mary Page
The makers of the BBC show Eggheads are looking for contestants, & have made a request for bridge players to take on their elite quizzers.
