ARTHUR HERRON
Arthur who was a member of Newcastle Bridge Club
for a great many years died on June 5th aged 94 years.

He will be remembered by many of the Members as a great player and Team member.

Hetty and David were overall winners of the Tuesday heat of the EBU Simultaneous Pairs Competition, and will be featured in the next edition of 'English Bridge'.
They are regular players at the popular Castle Morpeth Club and scored an impressive 70% to win the event.

JOYCE MARY OWEN

It is with great sadness we report the death of Joyce Mary Owen known universally as Joy on 11th June. Joy was a founder member of the Hurworth Bridge Club and an ever present on the committee for many years where her loyalty and hard work were enhanced by strong opinions many ahead of their time.

However many of the older members of the NEBA will remember her best when she was Congress Secretary for the Hurworth Bridge Congress which she ran for nearly 20 years.

In those days there were 50 tables and a waiting list. If only numbers like that could be achieved today!!

SHARING THE STAGE WITH JOAN BAKEWELL & DAVID ATTENBOROUGH item22

Whilst watching 'The Grammar School A secret History', on BBC 4, I was surprised and delighted to see one of our old friends from Ryton Bridge Club and now a regular player at Hexham Bridge Club Mabel McCoy. Mabel shared her memories of how she failed to get into Manchester Girls school but still achieved her goal of becoming a research scientist. Catch the programme on BBC i player

DURHAM BRIDGE CLUB

Watch out for the Durham Bridge Club column that will appear in the Durham Times. Note that results will always be a week in arrears as the last time to submit the column is Tuesday morning. (Still a pointer for other clubs though!)

RECOGNITION FOR DIRECTOR'S WORK

Cramlington B.C. committee has agreed that as from 8th June 2012, on the evenings when a member is acting as director, in recognition of this service to the club, neither the director nor his/her partner will be charged table money.
(Another good innovation.)

NEBA SUCCESSES IN THE EBU SIMS EVENTS

TOP OF THE TREE

Very well done to Hetty Jackson and David Gunn from the Castle Morpeth club. Their final percentage of 70.28% put them at the very top of the 1029 pairs that played in the Tuesday event.
A brilliant result.

WELCOME RETURN
item18
In the Wearside event it was great to see John Wooton who has been very ill recently and his regular partner Phyllis Hands achieving 6th place with an impressive 67%.
1165 pairs played in this event on Wednesday 9th May.

ANOTHER TOP TEN PLACE

In the Monday event, Liz Muir and Doug Curran from the Brunton club were only one place lower when another impressive 67% put them in 7th place with 1034 participating pairs.

AND FINALLY

In the Thursday heat that attracted 1295 pairs, the Hexham pair of Jocelyn Gordon and Pam Niven came 10th with another superb score of 68%. Well done to them all!

MYSTERY LADY

Can anyone put a name to the lady with a wide collar in the centre of the photograph? She may have played at Whitburn or Wearside Bridge Clubs.

The group are some of the founder members of Brunton Bridge Club, photographed round about 1980
