DAVID WING
David Wing is currently on a cycle tour of all 51 Cities in England to include each city cathedral and an EBU affiliated bridge club, whilst raising money for the Alzheimers Society.

"At 65 I wanted to do something crazy before the "Grim Reaper" gets me. Thus the "City Cup" project evolved as a vehicle to achieve three things:-

1) A personal physical challenge - over 1000 miles of cycling
2) Involvement and promotion of our wonderful game
3) Support for the Alzheimers Society

A City Cup event will be held at every bridge club and a Cup presented (as a gift from me) to the club. Each cup will be engraved with the name of the City plus the Winners names and hopefully this can then become an annual event

Should the clubs (or indeed anyone) wish to donate to the Alzheimers Society this can be done via the website: www.justgiving.com/citycup

SCARBOROUGH SUCCESS July 26 -29th

Clive Owen and John Holland won the Swiss Pairs event at the EBU Congress at Scarborough over the weekend.

Clive & John’s Swiss Pairs win at Scarborough was particularly impressive as they played on the top table for all eleven matches after the first round. 170 pairs participated.

UPDATE. WEST DENTON CLOSURE July 16th

Newcastle Council will take over the management of West Denton Community Association in mid August. and will subsequently look for a permanent management group. Their hope is to provide a seamless transition and to accommodate all the groups that presently use the Association.

ANNUAL NEBA v SCOTLAND E.D.

CLOSURE ----------------------------------------July 5th

West Denton Community Association is closing. This is of course the venue for Newcastle Bridge Club and they have only one month to find new premises.

If you know of possible alternatives please contact Chris Smith or Pat Procter.

ANNUAL NEBA v SCOTLAND E.D. MATCH

Although the following is not strictly 'NEWS' I was unaware of the origins of this event and include it for interest. Results since 1956 are now in the ARCHIVES

Ian Rankin writes -"The solid silver cup is called the ‘Newcastle Journal Bridge Challenge Cup’ & matches appear to have been held every year since 1956 except for 1968 & 2008. Originally they were tripartite matches between NEBA and the Western & Eastern divisions of the SBU, but the Western District dropped out in the mid-eighties".

Clive Owen adds "Actually for many years there were four teams playing. The central District also participated but never won. Used to be a 2 day event with a dinner on the Saturday night. With the increased demands of a modern bridge calendar Central and West dropped out. It was the blue riband of the NEBA calendar and everyone played their strongest teams unlike now. I don’t know about 2008 but virtually certain that in 1968 the competition will have taken place but the winners will not have engraved the trophy".

NEBA CONGRESS

After many years at Allensford, the NEBA has a new venue for their 2012 congress. The new venue is the Marriott Hotel, alongside the Metro Centre in Gateshead. More details will follow but the executive are confident that this venue will become an excellent and regular feature in the NEBA calendar for many years to come. Book early!
