Originally, in 1937, the
NEBA ran an Individual
competition, in which
every player partnered
every other player in
the competition. This
was quite popular until
probably some time in
the 70's, when its
popularity waned, and
that particular
competition was
cancelled. The Player of
the Year award was
inaugurated in 1996 (or
thereabouts), and as it
was an individual award,
it was felt to be
appropriate to award
that trophy to the
Player of the Year.
